Dr. Arnold Mathew was born on August 6, 1852 and was consecrated by Archbishop Gul, assisted by the Bishops van Thiel, Split and Demmel, in Utrecht (the Netherlands) on April 28, 1908 as the Old Catholic Bishop for Great Britain and Ireland.

There was dissatisfaction among the members of the Roman Catholic clergy in England at the time. The Utrecht Union was under the impression that they could be received in the Old Catholic communion. But the expected conversion didn't take place and Bishop Mathiew became very disharted. He tried first to establish an independant movement, then broke his relationship with Utrecht in 1910.
