Back in England, events were occuring at this time, which would place Wedgwood at the head of the Old Catholic Church in England. Doctor Mathiew, formally a Roman Catholic Priest, decided to return to that Church after a change of heart followed by an unsuccesfull attempt to stamp out the truly Catholic and Mystical elements among the Old Catholics.

He finally submitted to the Roman Obedience on December 31, 1915.

He died on December 19, 1919.
